It was Torpedalo sponsor John Burn Ltd that first put us in touch with Curvature Group and MD Nick Phelps. While it was always “the dream” to secure one major sponsor to machine both the upper and lower sections of the main boat hull, we never actually expected that we would find a sponsor as willing and generous as to actually take on the huge amount of work involved. That, however, was before we met Nick. Curvature Group, together with Norco GRP, forms the lynchpin of the boat manufacture, with John Burn, Sika and Cube Precision feeding in essential supplies and supplementary machining. They will machine a male pattern of the boat – that is, a full scale hard model of the entire boat, from which female moulds can be taken. The time and cost involved in manufacturing a dimensionally accurate, 1:1, portable model of an eight-metre-long boat is significant, and count ourselves incredibly lucky to have Nick and his team as part of Project Torpedalo.
